Our Beginning... by Flori Mejeur

While working as a counselor at Southwestern Medical Clinic I have repeatedly been led into the lives of adolescent girls who need mercy, compassion, and healing. They suffer physical abuse from the hands of others and, at times, from their own hands in the form of self-mutilation. Some have run away or have been forced to leave their homes due to dysfunctional family situations. These girls struggle with depression, eating disorders, substance abuse, and suicidal thoughts and attempts. I have cried with them, and for them, as they deem themselves worthless and begin to self-destruct. A weekly, one-hour session is not enough to bring them to a Father who loves them unconditionally and offers healing and hope.

This need for more intensive intervention compelled me to pursue local treatment alternatives, but my search continued to come up empty until I learned about a ministry in Nashville, Tennessee. This is a home where girls can stay free of charge and experience unconditional love and hope for a better life, sometimes for the very first time. Through subsequent visits to this facility, God began to give me a vision for starting a similar ministry in southwest Michigan.

While I was excited about the ministry and felt the extreme need for it, I also began to see my lack of knowledge in starting a non-profit organization and all that goes into building a successful treatment center. I wrestled with God as He continued to nudge me to keep the dream alive. He continued to bring girls into my office that needed respite from their difficult living situations.

About three years ago, I invited several others to begin praying about this dream. As we continued to meet, we shared the vision with our families and friends and the dream began to take shape. A board of directors was formed and the work to bring this ministry to reality was in full gear! The name Well of GRACE Ministries was inspired by the story about the Samaritan woman who met Jesus at the well and received grace. Using Jesus' example we move forward in the call to build a ministry that offers grace to hurting girls. God continues to remind us of our direction through blessings of financial support and words of encouragement from others. We recently purchased our first home and are currently in the process of bringing this dream into reality.
